Description
Rempstone Hall is a country house that has been progressively enlarged from a simple farmhouse, originating in the 17th century and expanded at the rear and to the right during the 18th and 19th centuries. The building has an irregular plan, with the original block featuring rubble stone walls and a stone slate roof that includes a central lead flat. It has brick end stacks and is two storeys high with an attic. The central entrance has an 18th-century raised panel door set in a classical surround with pilasters, a pediment, and a fanlight with intersecting glazing, all of which have been restored. This entrance is flanked by two sash windows with glazing bars. On each side, there are 20th-century canted flat-roofed bay windows with cornices and metal casements on both floors. The attic features four shallow gabled dormers with sash windows that have glazing bars.
At the rear, there is an 18th-century addition that creates a double-pile plan. To the right of the original block is a small two-storey flat-roofed block, followed by an 18th-century wing made of brick, which has a half-hipped tiled roof with stone eaves courses. This wing is also two storeys high with an attic and includes a 20th-century stone porch with a stone slate roof and a ledged door. Next to the porch is a single-storey extension with a stone slate hipped roof. The ground floor of this wing has three sash windows with glazing bars, while the first floor has six similar sash windows. Further to the right is a late 18th-century to early 19th-century range that is one storey and has an attic, with the right end now used as a garage. The ground floor features four sash windows with glazing bars, and the attic has four hipped dormers, three with sashes and one with casements. At the rear of the house, on the left end, is a large 19th-century extension of two storeys, which includes a pump on the right end wall dated 1833.
The interior has been much altered but retains an early 19th-century cut string staircase with simple shaped spandrels and a wreathed handrail. In the 19th-century block, the main ground floor room features a good ornamental plaster cornice and a marble fireplace surround.
