Description

Selaby Hall is a country house that likely dates from the mid-17th century, with significant additions made around 1790 and alterations in the early 20th century. The building features roughcast masonry and graduated green slate roofs, along with roughcast stacks. The main block, constructed around 1790, has a mid-17th century wing attached to the right rear.

The house has a two-storey, seven-bay front with a bowed three-bay center. The ground floor includes a low plinth, a sill band, and mainly renewed 12-pane sash windows with blind boxes. Above, there are renewed 9- and 12-pane sashes with projecting sills. A continuous eaves cornice runs along the roof, which is low-pitched and hipped, topped with four corniced ridge stacks. The left return has five bays with a bowed three-bay center, and the ground floor features three elongated 15-pane sashes. The right return has three bays with circular towers at the front and rear, which also contain mainly renewed 12-pane sashes. The rear tower features a 20th-century six-panel door, and both towers have low-pitched conical roofs.

The two-storey rear wing has four irregularly spaced bays. It includes double chamfered mullioned windows with two and three lights, featuring Gothick glazing and round-arched heads with Y-tracery. There is a 20th-century single-storey addition on the left side. The roof is hipped to the right and has two ridge stacks.

Inside, the rear wing features a doorway with a chamfered reveal and a four-centred head. The main block contains early 19th-century six-panel doors and window shutters.

There are outbuildings attached to the left return and rear, but they are not considered to be of special interest.
