Description

The Bridgewater Arms (west section) is a former village school that has been incorporated into the Bridgewater Arms Public House. It was built in 1851, with additions made to the rear in 1870. The building is constructed from sandstone rubble and features tooled-and-margined quoins, with a roof made of graduated sandstone flags and a stone stack. It is designed in the Tudor Revival style.

The structure is single-storey with a three-bay front. The central projecting gabled porch includes a doorway with a Tudor-arched head, chamfered reveals, a pair of late 20th-century doors, and a single-pane overlight. Above the doorway, there is a raised scroll with the date JAN 3, 1851, although the central section is concealed by lead sheathing. There is also a recessed square panel above with the monogram ACE. At the apex, a small gabled bellcote is present. The flanking windows are 2-light and sit under hoodmoulds, featuring chamfered mullions and elongated hexagonal quarries. The left return has a similar 3-light mullioned-and-transomed window.

The irregular rear of the building has two gabled wings with small 2- and 3-light mullioned windows. The roof is adorned with gable parapets that have chamfered copings and shaped kneelers, as well as a corniced right ridge stack. The attached public house on the right is not of special interest.
