Description
Winston Bridge is a road bridge that crosses the River Tees, built between 1762 and 1763 by Sir Thomas Robinson. The bridge is constructed from dressed sandstone and features a single semicircular arch that spans 34 meters. The arch is defined by an archivolt made of finely-jointed voussoirs and is now stabilized by eight iron tie rods and plates. Both the north and south faces of the bridge have massive rectangular-plan piers with buttressed raking sections on the east and west sides. The parapet has slightly-projecting coping supported by square brackets and is cambered over the arch, with the coping breaking forward over the piers to create pedestrian refuges. The east and west ends of the bridge are finished with low square-plan piers topped with pyramidal caps, and the west end of the bridge is slightly canted on plan. Winston Bridge spans the parishes of Winston and Barforth.
