Description
The West House is a detached house located in Nether Compton Village, dating from the early 17th century with restoration in the late 19th century, marked by the initials JRPG and the date 1890 above the first-floor windows. The building features rubble stone and dressed stone walls, with clay-tile roofs that have gable ends and stone gable copings. There are 19th-century brick stacks at the gable ends. The house is 1½ storeys tall and has two windows; the ground floor includes a 4-light and a 3-light window with moulded stone mullions and separate returned labels, dating from the 17th century. The first-floor windows are 3-light with straight-chamfered mullions from the 19th century, fitted with iron casements that have horizontal glazing bars. The gabled half-dormers feature applied timber framing. The front door, which has four recessed panels, is from the 19th century, and there is a modern open porch supported by Blue Lias monolith shafts from the 13th century.
