Description
Lower Dairy Farmhouse is a former farmhouse, now a private dwelling, dated 1661 as indicated by the initials “A 1661 RR, WR, TH” carved into the front wall. The building has undergone alterations, particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries, including replacement windows. The farmhouse is constructed of coursed rubble stone with a Roman-tile roof featuring gable ends. Stone gable copings are present on both the right-hand and front gable. Brick stacks are located at the left gable and on the ridge centre, although a right gable stack has been removed. The main structure is two storeys high, with a projecting right-angle range which is one-and-a-half storeys in height. To the left of the front range are two windows, one a 3-light casement with leaded glass at the top, and the other 12-pane and 16-pane sash windows with glazing bars and wood lintels. The front range has two 3-light 20th-century casements with glazing-bars. The rear elevation incorporates a 19th-century extension with a 20th-century alteration, and contains a plank door within a wooden frame. Inside, the farmhouse retains flagstone floors and mid-chamfered ceiling beams. A reset early 16th-century open stone fireplace has moulded stone jambes and a straight-chamfered Tudor arch head, along with a large lintel block and a bowtell-moulded stone cornice above.
