Description
The Griffin's Head is a detached inn located in Nether Compton, dated 1599, with alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features coursed rubble stone walls and a projecting stone bench at the front stack. It has plain clay-tile roofs with gable ends, and a Roman tile roof at the left-hand end. The stone gable coping at the left-hand end includes an apex block, and there are brick stacks on the inner left-hand gable, the front stack gable, and the right-hand gable.
The inn is two storeys with attics, and the main range at the centre has four windows, which are two- and three-light wood casements with glazing bars, wood cills, and lintels. The right side of the front stack has 19th and 20th-century alterations, while the left end shows some blocking. The front entrance is located immediately to the left of the front stack and features a plank door with strap hinges and a concrete lintel above.
At the left-hand end, there is a range butted on that is 1½ storeys high with two windows, including a three-light and a two-light wood casement with glazing bars, along with wood cills and lintels. A plank door with strap hinges is situated left of centre. The rear of the building includes pentice-roofed outhouses. Inside, there are deep-chamfered ceiling beams from the 17th century and open fireplaces at the left-hand end, featuring chamfered wood lintels and rebuilt stone jambs. The front fireplace also has rebuilt jambs. The attached, restored range at the east end is not of special interest.
