Description

The Old School is a former National School and Schoolmaster’s House, dating from 1843. It is now a private dwelling and studio. The building is constructed of ashlar stone with a slate roof, gable ends, and stone gable copings. A rendered stack is located on the right-hand gable of the Schoolmaster’s House, while an octagonal stack sits at the right-hand end.

The Schoolmaster’s House is two storeys high with two windows. It features a 3-light, straight-chamfered stone mullioned window. The windows have iron casements with lead lights, and a plank door at the left of the ground floor, beneath a separate label. The former schoolroom is single-storey with a crenellated parapet and three windows, each with 3-lights, mullion and transom details, with trefoil-cusped heads and moulded jambs. The porch entrance, located to the left of centre, has diagonal buttresses, stone gable copings with moulded kneelers, and a cross at the top. The doorway is topped with a Tudor arch in a square head, with trefoiled spandrels and a label with head stops. A plank door completes the porch.
