Description

The former Methodist Chapel, now a store, was built in 1818 according to local Methodist Society records and has been altered over time. The structure is made of cob on a brick plinth with some flint, featuring brick dressings and a double Roman tile roof. It is a single-storey building with an inserted loft and has a gable end facing the road, consisting of one by two bays.

The roadside gable originally had a central doorway that has been bricked up and replaced with a later window. There is an inserted doorway above with a board door, and the apex of the gable is weatherboarded, with projecting ends of the purlins visible. At the rear, there is a bricked-up short pointed-arched window, and the gable apex is also weatherboarded.

On the left side, there is a bricked-up doorway with a segmental header-brick arch at the left end. The right side features an inserted central stable door, with a bricked-up segmental header-brick-arched window to the left.

Inside, the building has an inserted brick and cobble cow-house floor and loft. The roof structure includes king-post trusses with through purlins, supported by long braces rising from the walls and having short ties to the feet of the principal rafters. The roof is underdrawn with lath and plaster, though much of it has collapsed.

At the time of inspection, the chapel was in a state of disrepair. It is noteworthy that five of the six Tolpuddle Martyrs were Methodists, and it is presumed they worshipped in this building.
