Description
Deveral Chapel is a Methodist chapel that is reputedly dated to around 1793-1794 and was extended in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of rendered rubble, possibly cob, and features a grouted scantle slate roof at the front (east) and an asbestos slate roof at the rear. There is a brick chimney on the left-hand gable end and a polygonal scantle slate roof with cast-iron ogee gutters over the porch that adjoins the right-hand gable end.
The chapel has a rectangular aisle-less plan with the entrance located at the south (ritual west) end. The original part of the chapel is a single storey and includes two windows at both the front and rear, with a doorway in the middle of the right-hand (south) gable end. The late 19th-century vestry on the left has one window at the front and a doorway at the rear, featuring an original four-panel door with an overlight. The main doorway in the front wall of the porch has an original 19th-century four-panel door with a two-pane overlight. The windows are 19th-century 12-pane hornless sashes.
Inside, the chapel features box pews that are slightly stepped up to the south, in front of which is a space that was formerly occupied by benches. It is claimed to be the oldest Methodist chapel still in use in Cornwall.
