Description
St James's Cottage is a former account house, now divided into two cottages, dating from the early 19th century. The building is constructed of painted rubble with dressed granite quoins, sills, jambstones, and lintels. It features an asbestos slate roof with gable ends that sweep lower over the wider entrance front. Brick chimneys are located over the axial middle wall at either end.
The structure has a double depth plan, with two identical one-room-wide cottages at the entrance front (south) and two cross passages adjoining in the middle. The rear of the building is taller, comprising two storeys over a basement. The ground floor likely served as service rooms or offices, while the first floor was originally the main office or board room, which has now been converted into a bedroom for each cottage.
The entrance front is nearly symmetrical with two windows and a pair of doorways towards the middle. The doors and windows are from the 20th century, except for the four-pane horned sashes of the left-hand cottage, which may date back to the 19th century. The rear is also symmetrical, with two storeys over a basement and two windows, the first-floor windows being taller and the eaves level much higher. There are two very small basement windows slightly left of the other windows, and the larger windows are four-pane horned sashes.
The interior has not been inspected. This building is considered curious and possibly unique, as it may have been purpose-built as a count house that incorporated two cottages into its design, or it could have been a count house converted into two cottages by adding the front. There is also a suggestion that it was originally an engine house that was later converted. The design of this count house can be compared to that of Godolphin Count House in Breage Parish.
