Description
The Methodist Chapel, located on Dorchester Road in Tolpuddle, was built in the mid-19th century, reportedly in memory of the Tolpuddle Martyrs. The chapel features plastered walls, with the front wall marked out in ashlar. It has a slate roof with bargeboards and bracketed eaves, and is positioned at right angles to the road. The gable end includes a flush panel door set in a round arched opening with a solid tympanum, flanked by two sash windows with glazing bars. The side walls also have two sash windows with glazing bars.
The forecourt is enclosed by a low brick wall topped with stone coping, and features iron railings with spearhead tops. There is a brick corner pier with a moulded stone cap. At the front, there is a memorial gateway made of ashlar stone, featuring a round arch under a pediment inscribed with "Tolpuddle Martyrs," along with a history and date of erection from 1912. The gateway includes moulded imposts and marble panels on each side commemorating the Martyrs, along with an iron gate with vertical rails topped with spearheads. This chapel is included for its local historic interest.
