Description

A terrace of three cottages located on The Green in Tolpuddle. Numbers 1 and 2 likely date to the 17th century, while number 3 is of late 15th to early 16th century origin. The cottages are constructed of plastered cob walls with hipped thatched roofs, and brick stacks are positioned along the ridge. They are arranged as one storey with attics. Number 1, at the left end, features a stack at the right end and one to the right of the centre. It has a flush panel door set within a hipped thatched porch, along with three casement windows on the ground floor, incorporating a centre horizontal bar. The attic contains one dormer with casements matching the ground floor. Internally, a large central chimney stack contains a built-up fireplace. Number 2, situated centrally, shares a stack at the left end. It has a ledged door and ground floor casement windows, one with glazing bars, one with a centre horizontal bar, and two metal casements. The attic displays three half dormers with casements featuring a centre horizontal bar. Number 3, at the right end, was originally a long-house with an open hall, including an attached byre on the right. The byre has now been incorporated into the living accommodation, but with a roof at a lower level. This cottage has a half-hipped thatched roof and one brick stack at the right end of the house section, along with a 20th-century inserted stack in the former byre. It has a ribbed ledged door and four casement windows on the ground floor—two of these are within the byre. The attic has two full and one half dormer, all featuring casements with glazing bars. A small single-storey porch wing is present at the rear. Internally, the main ground floor room contains a large open fireplace with a timber lintel and a bread oven. Remaining elements of a cruck truss are visible adjoining the byre.
