Description
The Church of St John is an Anglican parish church with origins dating back to the 12th century, expanded in the 13th and 14th centuries. It was restored in 1855 by the architect T.H. Wyatt. The church is constructed of a mixed combination of flint and rubble stone with ashlar dressings. The nave, aisle, and transept have copper roofs, while the chancel and porch have slate roofs with coped gables.
The church comprises a nave, a two-bay north aisle, a north transept, a shallow south transept, a chancel, and a west tower, along with a south porch. The tower, of two stages, initially dates to the early 13th century with a later addition in the 15th century. It features a corbel table and string course marking the junction between the stages, and a battlemented parapet with a string course at its base. Belfry windows of two lights, containing Perpendicular tracery and hoodmoulds, are present, alongside smaller rectangular windows in the lower stage. Angle buttresses define the lower stage. The main west window is four-centred arched with three lights, mullioned and transomed. The south porch has a segmental pointed arched doorway with an inner doorway dating to the 12th century, round arched and featuring a solid tympanum. A 19th-century two-light window with curvilinear tracery is found in the south nave wall, west of the porch, with a similar window in the south transept. A square-headed three-light window with cinquefoil lights and a hoodmould is located in the nave wall, east of the porch. The chancel walls contain single-light and two-light 19th-century lancets with trefoil heads. A priest's door is found in the south wall, and the east window is a 19th-century design of three stepped lancets with trefoil heads. Additional lancets and a three-light window with Perpendicular tracery appear in the north wall. A reset, blocked 12th-century doorway is present in the north aisle wall, along with a two-light and a three-light window, both with Perpendicular tracery, and a single lancet in the west wall.
Internally, the walls are plastered. The chancel, largely rebuilt in the 19th century, features a trussed rafter roof supported by carved stone corbels. The chancel arch, dating to the 14th century, is of two orders with octagonal responds. Remains of a rood doorway are visible in the arcade wall. The nave arcade is of two chamfered orders, continuous and without capitals. A similar arch opens to the south transept, and another to the north transept, both with arches of two orders dying into flat responds. An arch leads to the tower. The nave roof is 14th century, with tie beams and braced crown posts. The porch has a king post roof, while the north transept and aisle feature 19th-century roofs. A 12th-century monument depicting a vested priest in low relief is located in the transept. A trefoiled piscina is present in the east wall.
