Description
The James Hammett monument is a churchyard memorial located east of the northwest corner of the churchyard of the Church of Saint John in Tolpuddle. It was erected in 1934 by Eric Gill. The monument features a headstone with a shaped top and a moulded surround. It bears an inscription dedicated to James Hammett, who died in 1891 and was the only one of the Tolpuddle Martyrs to return to the village. Above the inscription is the date 1834, which is surrounded by a chain. The monument is significant for its importance in the history of the Trade Union movement.
