Description

The Independent Methodist Chapel is a Methodist chapel built in 1815. It is constructed of brick and features a Welsh slate roof. The building has a four-window range that is unequally divided and is situated on a sloping site, with a basement at the rear and an entrance accessed by steps on the right. The tall windows have stone sills and flat-arched brick heads, complemented by stained glass margin lights. The entrance consists of paired panelled doors set within a stone pedimented architrave, surrounded by cast-iron railings and gates. There are blind windows in the basement, and a stack is located on the left-hand gable end, with paired high windows on either side of the stack in the gable wall. The lower side is similarly detailed but features a full basement with three doors that have stone sills and jambs, while some windows are partially blocked.

Inside, the chapel has galleries on three sides, with frontals that include sunken panels, all supported by cast-iron columns, each featuring a knop and moulded capital. The interior contains a complete set of panelled box pews and tiered seats arranged around a rostrum below the organ. The roof is a queen post design. The basement rooms include features such as fireplaces with simple stone surrounds and grates. This chapel is noted as the oldest place of worship in Oldham for Methodists.
