Description

The County Court, built in 1894 by Henry Tanner, is a courthouse and office located on Church Lane in Oldham. It features red brick construction with white terracotta details and a Westmorland slate roof. The building is two storeys high with an attic and has an asymmetrical layout. The entrance is located on the left and has a shallow segmental arch with deep moulding and paired panelled doors. Above the entrance, there are three foiled lights with a frieze displaying low relief arms and the inscription "County Court" set against a heavily foliate background.

The central range of the building has five two-light mullioned and transomed windows on the ground floor, all with a continuous hood mould. Above these, tall blind panels create aprons for the upper windows, which consist of paired foiled lights alternating with three-tiered mullioned and transomed windows. These windows cut into two gabled dormers, each adorned with polygonal pilasters that end in finials and a central chamfered finial.

To the right, there is an additional doorway with paired foiled lights beside it and an oriel window above, supported by a central moulded pilaster buttress that springs from a dog corbel. Small service windows are located beyond this section. The building has a steep hipped roof with vents. It was originally constructed to be fireproof, featuring glazed brick interior wall linings among other fire-resistant materials.
