Description

The Ponsonby and Carlile Office is an office building constructed between 1901 and 1902, designed by Edgar Wood. It features an ashlar facade with brick at the rear and a stone flagged roof. The building is two storeys high and has a three-window range that is highlighted by pilasters. The wide central entrance is adorned with an elongated keystone that extends to cut the high string course above. The keystone bears the initials H.B. and is also found on the rainwater heads, which are dated 1902. Each side of the lintel is decorated with carved trees. The entrance has paired doors with narrow stained glass lights and brass name-plates, along with a blind mullioned band above. On either side of the entrance, there are bands of five-light leaded mullioned and transomed windows with segmentally-arched heads. The windows above have timber lintels situated below the eaves, which are supported by wrought-iron brackets that sharply overhang. The roof features three gabled dormers and end wall stacks. The rear elevation is constructed of brick and includes a central canted full-height bay with a parapet that extends to the left, overhanging eaves on the right-hand side, and two heavy gabled dormers in the roof.
