Description

Lloyd's Avenue House is an office building constructed between 1900 and 1914, possibly designed by architects E. Colcutt and B. Emmanuel, who oversaw the architectural development of this street laid out in 1899. The building is made of stone and features a high hipped roof of slate, which has been recently rebuilt. It stands four storeys tall with two dormer floors above a high basement and has a symmetrical five-window range. Most windows are flat arched, except where noted.

The main elevation centers around a round-arched entrance, which is set within a distyle in antis Ionic porch. The spandrels of the porch are intricately carved with banners and acanthus leaves, topped by a segmental pediment that features armorial crests in the tympanum. The ground floor has a plinth and high socles, with windows framed by plain piers, and an entablature that steps out over each pier to form an impost block. The first floor has Ionic pilasters, while the center range features a round-arched light with palm frond carvings in the spandrels. A blind balustrade is present above the second-floor center window.

The second and third floors have segmental arched windows with blocked architraves and plain pilaster strips. A sill band runs along the third-floor windows, and a projecting cornice steps out over the pilaster strips. The segmental pedimented dormer in the center range may be a recent addition or a reconstruction of an original design, as are the pairs of pedimented dormers on either side. The building has stacks on the party walls and flat-arched openings with glazing bars resembling a Venetian window, along with swan-necked security bars of original design. Lloyd's Avenue House is included as part of an important and cohesive group of Edwardian buildings in Lloyd's Avenue.
