Description
No. 42 Crutched Friars is an early 18th-century building that stands four storeys tall, plus a basement. It features three windows, along with two additional windows above the entrance to the French Ordinary Court. The building is constructed of red brick, accented with rubbed dressings and painted rusticated strip pilasters. There is a slight cornice below the top storey and a parapet. The entrance has a steeply cambered arch, flanked by rusticated pilasters that support a Doric entablature. The ground storey includes 19th-century stucco and a three-light window, which retains its doorcase featuring Corinthian pilasters, a cornice, and a patterned rectangular light. The area railings have urn finials that date from the late 18th century. The rear elevation is plain brick with storey-bands and a closet wing that has altered windows. Inside, there is a plaster ceiling with two beams in the carriageway.
