Description
Lloyd's Registry, located at 71 Fenchurch Street, is a Grade II* listed building completed in 1900 by the architect Collcutt. This striking corner building is constructed from rich Portland stone and features a free classical style with extensive sculptural and carved decoration, possibly by Frampton. It has three main storeys plus an additional storey in a slated roof, along with a modern storey added later.
The ground storey is partly arcaded, supported by a row of rusticated Doric columns. The first floor showcases an Ionic order with balustraded and pedimented windows. The design includes two circular, domed turrets and a balustrade atop a modeled attic. The main entrance is situated on Fenchurch Street, set behind an arcade and featuring impressive wrought iron gates. There is also a secondary entrance on Lloyd's Avenue, which includes a curved, domed pavilion that is set back from the main frontage. The larger section of this elevation is simpler, with a rusticated upper wall face.
Inside, the front part of the building is particularly noteworthy, featuring a vaulted entrance hall and a staircase made of colored marbles. The interior includes sculptures and friezes in marble, bronze, and mother-of-pearl, also attributed to Frampton. A circular stained glass window adds to the interior's charm. The ground floor houses a vaulted library with exquisite inlaid joinery and a carved marble chimney piece. The first floor landing is richly decorated, and there is a general committee room featuring marble columns on pedestals that support a vaulted ceiling, with painted panels by Gerald Moira. The room also boasts a decorative chimney piece with tiles and a painting by F. Brangwyn, which conceals figure carvings. The inlaid mahogany wainscot and doorcase are complemented by bronze reliefs and a clock face made of mother-of-pearl in the tympanum of the segmental pediment. The furniture is designed to match the wainscot.
