Description
The gateway in the yard of the Church of St Katherine Cree, dated 1631, is made of Portland stone and designed in a coarse classical style. It features an architraved opening that is flanked by Ionic half pilasters and sections of entablature. Above the opening is a pediment with a carving of a corpse in the tympanum. There is also a large tablet over the opening with a recut inscription and the date. The gateway has been blocked and converted into a fountain in 1965, having been moved from its original position at the southeast angle of the church, where it served as the entrance to the churchyard.
