Description
The Bevis Marks Synagogue, built in 1701, is a Grade I listed building located in London. It is a plain, rectangular structure made of red brick, featuring modest dressings of Portland stone. The building has two tiers of windows, with segmentally arched windows below and round-arched windows above, including larger central openings on the east and west elevations that have semi-elliptical heads. A simple cornice and parapet adorn the top of the building. The west doorway is highlighted by a segmental pediment supported by consoles, with a lamp mounted on a decorative iron bracket.
Inside, the synagogue has a plain interior with a gallery supported by Doric columns on three sides. The ceiling has been altered, likely in the 19th century. However, many fittings remain remarkably complete and have changed little from their original arrangement, with some being older than the building itself. These include wainscot, benches, railings, a finely carved echal or reredos, and seven large brass chandeliers. This synagogue is significant as the second one built in England following the resettlement of Jews in 1656, and its well-preserved condition makes it of exceptional historic interest.
