Description

The Church of St Andrew Undershaft, located on the east side of St Mary Axe, dates from 1520 to 1532 and incorporates a 15th-century tower that was partly rebuilt in 1830. It features an aisled nave and chancel with a clerestory and no structural division. The tower is situated at the southwest corner of the church. The building is constructed of squared rubble, partly rendered with cement, and has Portland stone parapets. The chancel has a slight projection, and there is a polygonal stair turret on the north side. The tower rises independently of the clerestory and has an enriched doorway on the south side, flanked by buttresses and a square turret to the northwest. The top stage of the tower is now rendered with renewed battlements and large pinnacles. The church has flat timber roofs with bosses in the north and main aisles, the latter featuring a cove. There are paintings in the spandrels of the arcade, dating from around 1726. Inside, there is a marble font by Nicholas Stone with a cover, two sword rests, and a fine late 17th-century organ case with two large figures. The church also contains altar rails, a pulpit, and pews that have been cut down from older ones. The doorcases to the north and under the tower have segmental pediments. The church features stained glass and notable monuments, particularly to Thomas Offley, who died in 1582; John Stow, who died in 1605; and Hugh Hammersley, who died in 1636. There is a plain 17th-century brick vestry to the northeast, with a 19th-century stone addition to the west.
