Description

The Lloyd's Building, located on Leadenhall Street, was constructed between 1928 and 1930 by Sir Edwin Cooper. This building features a classical style and is made of Portland stone. The narrow eastern section has a large, ornamented doorway set within a colossal niche that includes a coffered semi-dome. On either side of this entrance, there are single windows on two storeys and five square windows on the upper storey, which is richly detailed. The building is topped with a huge pediment that includes figure sculpture in the tympanum.

The main section consists of five storeys, with an entrance located at a canted corner. The ground storey has rusticated piers and a Doric entablature, along with a pair of columns at the entrance. Above this, there is an enriched rusticated mezzanine and pilastered, pedimented windows. The top storey features carved panels and a large modillion cornice, which is topped by a parapet. The entire frontage is accented by three-storeyed, stepped attics.

The east return of the building has a single window and a simpler design, with the main building set back above the three-storeyed frontage. Inside, there are fine entrance halls, particularly in the western part, which includes a war memorial designed by Lutyens located in the rear portion of the building. The rear ground floor hall was originally built as Lloyd's underwriting room.
