Description
The Former Port of London Authority Building, built between 1912 and 1922 by Sir Edwin Cooper, is a large, detached, monumental structure made of Portland stone. It has a nearly square plan with an entrance located at the canted southeast corner. The building originally featured a plain courtyard that was filled by a large rotunda, which was destroyed during World War II. It consists of four storeys plus a basement, topped with a slated mansard that is treated as a stone attic for the end pavilions and the entrance.
The design includes a deep entablature with pairs of Corinthian columns in antis at the pavilions. The entrance portico, also in antis, features four columns and has an entablature topped by a balustrade in front of the attic. Above this, a broad tower is embellished with Corinthian pilasters and piers, an arched niche, and a colossal figure sculpture, with a stepped upper part.
Inside, the entrance hall and corridors are of notable distinction, and there is a suite of richly panelled rooms on the second floor, including a dining room, a chairman's room, and a board room, with the latter two featuring exceptional carved decoration.
