Description

The Market Place Chapel, originally a Methodist chapel and now a Brethren chapel, was built in 1867. It is constructed from snecked stone with tooled and margined rusticated dressings, while the rear part is made of brick. The roof is covered with Welsh slate and features a white brick stack. The chapel is accompanied by cast-iron railings on a squared stone wall.

The street front is divided into two sections. The main section has three bays with pointed-arched, eight-pane sash windows that have Gothic glazing in the heads. There is a stone tablet on the right side between the windows that reads "PRIMITIVE METHODIST CHAPEL" along with the date. The gables are coped with moulded kneelers, and there is a small square finial on the left end, with a later stack on the right end. The lower, three-bay section on the left is set back, with the left bay canted back towards the street. It features a boarded door on the right and similar windows.

Inside, the chapel retains much of its original character, including a central box pulpit with a pointed-arched sounding board behind it. The interior has simple pewing and a boarded dado, along with a moulded plaster cornice.

The area wall is low, with chamfered coping that supports the railings featuring foliate standards, and there are two gates with latticed half rails.
