Description

The Hospital of Saints John the Baptist and John the Evangelist, founded in 1437, is a Grade I listed building completed in 1448. Originally designed in an L-shape, the main range faces Trendle Street. An east wing was added in 1866, providing additional accommodation, a new Board Room with an oriel window, and a Cloister, based on a design by William Slater.

The east end of the Trendle Street range features a Chapel with Perpendicular windows to the south and east, the latter containing 15th-century glass. A stone arch and a carved oak screen separate the chapel from the ante-chapel. The altar piece is a triptych in oils on oak panel, dating from the 15th century and likely Flemish, making it of significant interest.

The western part of the building is two stories high, housing the ante-chapel and dining hall on the ground floor, with dormitories and the old Board Room above. The upper rooms reveal an open timber roof. The Trendle Street front includes the entrance to the ante-chapel, which was the original main entrance, featuring a pointed arch and carved spandrels. This entrance is flanked by niches with ogee heads and crockets.

The listed buildings in Abbey Close form a group with the east end of No 1 Finger Lane, as well as with the premises occupied by Mr. Hunt, Digby Estate Nos 170 and 171, and the cottages known as Nos 4 and 2 Trendle Street, along with the former Church House and Public Weighbridge House on Half Moon Street.
