Description

Cothays Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century with later alterations. It features rubble walls that have been washed, with some new brick quoins. The thatch roof has a gable end on the left side and a large hip on the right side, along with a catslide roof over a later carriage-house. The main stack is located on the original rear wall, projecting out with a moulded plinth. The house is in an L-shape, with a small rear wing facing the lane. Inside, there is a cross-passage, with the original kitchen situated at the southeast end of the house. The south elevation has one and a half storeys and includes five windows in the main range, which are wooden casements with glazing bars, some of which have been renewed. Most windows are of two lights, with one being of three lights. The front door, located to the right of centre, is made of wood and dates from the 20th century. The interior features a cross-passage that was formerly at the south end, with a partition wall of muntins and 20th-century brick nogging leading into the hall. There is an integral two-centred doorway, and the hall fireplace is made of stone with a Tudor-arch head and moulded jambs, featuring spandrels with carvings of an axe on the left and a knife on the right. The beams are straight and deep-chamfered, dating from the 16th century.
