Description
Church House is a former poor house, now divided into two dwellings, dating from the early 19th century and remodelled around the 1830s, with some alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed from stuccoed stone rubble and features a Welsh slate roof with gabled ends, along with brick stacks at the axial and gable ends.
The structure is a long rectangular three-storey range located near the church. The southeast front is asymmetrical with six bays; the second floor has five small two-light casements with glazing bars, along with two 12-pane sashes, two large sashes with 20 and 24 panes, and two additional two-light casements with glazing bars. The ground floor includes 20th-century casements on the right and a 20th-century panelled double door to the left. At the rear, there is an asymmetrical arrangement of two-light casements with glazing bars and a 20th-century conservatory on the right.
Inside, the ground floor features a small room at the southwest end with a fireplace that has a simple early 19th-century chimneypiece and range, and a room southwest of the centre with a large kitchen fireplace that includes a timber bressumer and oven. The first floor contains some early 19th-century panelled doors and a Victorian fireplace with a chimneypiece and grate. The second floor attics reveal an exposed roof structure with staggered tenoned purlins.
Notably, a building on this site is shown on Isaac Taylor's map from 1765, and the 1866 Ordnance Survey map identifies it as Church House. This building is a good example of a pre-1834 Act poor house.
