Description

Candida House is a large house situated within grounds, originally the Rectory, dating to the late 18th century and around 1830. It is constructed of lias stone walls, now plastered, with a slate roof featuring stone gable copings, level kneelers, and ridge-cresting. There are two parallel ridges with gable ends and two rendered stacks with a moulded cornice. The house has a double-pile plan with a front door on the right-hand end wall, and includes cellars. The main elevation has two storeys and attics, with four wooden sash windows containing thin glazing bars. Two 20th-century dormers with flat roofs and asbestos felt roofing have been added. The front door is a six-panel design with a semi-circular fanlight containing glazing bars, dating to around 1800, and is sheltered by a wooden porch with a pediment and Tuscan pilaster framing. The cellars have brick barrel-vaults and stone gully surrounds. Internally, there are elliptical-headed arches in the corridors, and a large alcove with original shelving, dating to around 1800, in the kitchen. A parishioner's room is located near the front door, and a servants' staircase rises from the kitchen. Attached to the rear is a former service range, now a cottage, with a stone gable coping topped with a ball finial. A coach house stands further to the rear, constructed of coursed lias stone walls with an asbestos slate roof and gable ends. It has a rectangular plan, one sliding sash window, and two 20th-century half dormers with glazing bars on its north face.
