Description
Manse Cottage and The Old Manse, originally a former manse occasionally used for a Congregational minister, are now a private house and an attached cottage. The buildings date to the early 18th century. The main house has brick walls in a Flemish bond pattern, with burnt headers, brick pilasters on the front wall, and a dentil brick cornice. A white plat band runs along the front. It has a slate mansard roof with stone slab eaves, and brick stacks at the gable ends. The house is two storeys high with dormers, and has three windows to the front. The ground floor windows are sashes with glazing-bars, in a tripartite arrangement of one pane, four panes, and one pane width, with gauged brickwork and projecting dropped keys, painted white. The first floor has three sash windows with 16 panes, also with gauged brickwork. The front door is centrally located and has six recessed panels; it is a 20th-century addition, as is the segmental fanlight above it with glazing-bars and the open pediment. Number 21, located at the former service end, features walls of knapped flint and banded brick, with pilastered corners and a dentil cornice. It also has a mansard slate roof, hipped on the right-hand side. It has two storeys, one window, and an outshut. The window on the ground floor is a 2-light casement with irregularly spaced glazing-bars, gauged brickwork, and a key. The first floor has a tripartite casement with similar brickwork. A late 19th-century brick outshut extends to the right, with a pentice slate roof, a 2-light wood casement, and a 20th-century plank door to the left. A rear wing also exists.
