Description
The Old House is an attached house that was refronted in the early 18th century, although it has an earlier core. It features brick walls set on an ashlar stone plinth, with a brick plat band and a heavy wooden dentil cornice. The walls are painted pink, and the house has slate roofs with stone gable-coping at the south end and a rebuilt stack at the north end. The building is two storeys high and has four windows on the front, which are tripartite sashes with moulded flush frames and wooden cills. On the first floor, there are three-light wooden casements with wooden cills. The front door, located to the left of centre, has recessed panels and upper lights, framed by reeded pilasters and a plain entablature with a dentil cornice, dating from the 18th century. The porch is supported by Roman Doric stone columns and features a heavy wooden segmental shell-hood above, which is carved with a raised shell and mask, also from the 18th century. At the rear, there is a long wing with rubble-stone walls and tiled roofs, along with a brick stack on the rear gable. This wing is two storeys high and contains a mixture of two- and three-light wooden casements with lead lights and wooden cills, dating from the 18th century. Inside, one room is lined with early 18th-century bolection-moulded panelling, and there is a fireplace and overmantel of similar style on the first floor. Additionally, there is some later 18th-century panelling and a staircase from the same period.
