Description

This is a former abbey tenement, now a private house, located in Abbey Street, Cerne Abbas. The core of the building dates to the early 16th century, with later alterations in the 19th century and subsequent modifications. The exterior is constructed of knapped flint with a banded stone plinth, and plastered walls, with projecting upper floors. A moulded stone corbelled detail is visible at the party wall, dating to the 16th century. A brick stack is positioned at the centre of the ridge.

The building has two storeys and four windows. The ground floor includes a 20th-century garage entrance, a blocked doorway, and a bow window with curved-framed sash windows, featuring 2-, 3- and 2-light glazing bars and a reeded wooden cill, typical of the early 19th century. To the right of centre is a 3-light casement window with glazing bars. The first-floor windows are 2-light wooden casements with wooden sills. The front door, positioned centrally, is a two-leaf design with flush panels and top lights above.

Inside, the building retains moulded ceiling-beams from the 16th century, and stone fireplaces with four-centred heads, also from the 16th century. Due to limited inspection, the roof construction is potentially of significance.
