Description
No. 9 Abbey Street is a former abbey tenement that has been converted into a private house. It dates from the early 16th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building features a plinth made of knapped flint and banded stone, with plastered walls and a jettied structure. Three jetty-braces are still visible. Notable architectural details include moulded stone corbelling to the left of a canted bay and at the right gable end, both from the 16th century. The roof has a brick stack at the ridge center and a 20th-century stack at the right-hand end, near the front eaves. A stone ball-finial is located at the right gable.
The house has two storeys and three windows, with canted bays on the left side at both the ground and first floors, which are not aligned. The windows include sashes with glazing bars: two, three, and two-light on the ground floor, and three, three, and three-light on the first floor. To the right of the front door, there are three-light wooden casements with glazing bars from the 19th or 20th century. On the first floor, there are three two-light wooden casements with glazing bars. The left-hand end features high plank garage doors. The central front door is made of planks and muntins, topped with an embattled wood lintel and small top lights from the 20th century. The interior has not been inspected but may be of considerable importance.
