Description

Westdowne House is a detached villa set in its own grounds, built in the early 19th century. The building is rendered with a slate roof and has a compact square shape facing south, featuring an extended wing to the northeast and a small later extension to the west.

The garden front has two storeys with three windows; the first floor has large 16-pane sash windows with stone sills, while the ground floor features plain sashes that extend to floor level. The central panelled door, which includes a transom light, is sheltered by a large square portico supported by fluted Roman Doric columns, which do not have entasis. This portico carries a triglyph entablature beneath an enclosed pediment on three sides, with glazed sides and front. The building also features a plinth, a first-floor plat band, a moulded cornice, a blocking course, and a parapet.

On the left side, there is an added one-storey extension in painted brick, which has an octagonal outer end and various windows. The right side is divided into two parts; the main range has 16-pane sashes arranged in four bays, followed by a section with two 12-pane sashes set lower. This section features a pair of heavy unfluted Tuscan columns in antis that lead to a recessed porch with a door, transom light, and sidelights. Beyond this, there is another door with a transom light and a segmental head. The cornice and blocking continue along the full length of the range. The building has two stacks on the front range and two on the wing. The interior has not been inspected.
