Description

Markham House is a former detached house from the early 19th century, now divided into three ownerships. The exterior features a rendered or pebble-dashed finish on No. 142 and slate roofs. The property is set back from the main road, with a principal facade facing north over open countryside, and retains some remnants of a formal garden.

The original house is a wide, four-bay structure that has been slightly extended to the right, with a larger range to the left (No. 144). It stands two storeys tall, with the main range displaying four windows. The first floor has 16-pane sash windows, while the ground floor features two 16-pane windows alternating with doors; the far left door is a six-panel design, and the centre door is also a six-panel under a plain fanlight.

To the right, No. 140 has a glazed door and a replacement window. The full width of this range includes a glazed verandah supported by slender cast-iron columns, which is enclosed with glazing for No. 140. The building has raised coped verges, a large stack to the left, and three ridge stacks.

To the right of the main range is a low single-bay hipped extension, and to the left is a low two-storey range (No. 144) featuring narrow 8-pane lights, with two on the first floor and three on the ground floor, and a glazed entrance door on the far left. The glazed verandah continues across this range, which has a low-pitched hipped roof. At the back, facing north, there are two tripartite bows with 8:12:8-pane sashes, a central sash, a square bay, and some later window additions. The interior has not been inspected.
