Description

This outbuilding, located to the northwest of Russell House, was originally used as a cowhouse and stables. The central seven structural bays date back to the 17th century, while the mid to late 18th century bays are on the right (south), and a 19th century bay, likely a former stable, is on the left (north). The building is constructed from coursed limestone rubble and features a Welsh slate roof that is hipped to the north and gabled with stone coping to the south. It has a long rectangular four-unit plan and is a single storey.

The west elevation includes timber lintels over 20th century casement windows, along with old plank doors that have strap hinges, set in a heavy pegged frame to the left of center. There is another door with dressed quoins further to the left, and a tall doorway leading to the 19th century bay on the left. The south gable has a mid-20th century entry. The rear of the building features two similar old plank doors.

Inside, the 17th century section retains two chamfered beams, one of which has an ogee stop. The roof is a notable 9-bay pegged collar-truss design with tusk-tenoned purlins. This building is a significant example of an old livestock structure, associated with the lean-to dairy of the main house.
