Description

HALSTOCK ST 50 NW HALSTOCK VILLAGE 1 /10001 Outbuilding to NW of Russell House GV II

Outbuilding, former cowhouse and stables. 7 structural bays to centre are C17; mid/late C18 bays to right (south); C19 bay, probable former stable, to left (north). Coursed limestone rubble; Welsh slate roof, hipped to north and gabled with stone coping to south. Long rectangular 4-unit plan. One storey. West elevation has timber lintels over C20 casement windows, old plank doors with strap hinges set in heavy pegged frame to left of centre and another with dressed quoins further to left; tall doorway to C19 bay on left. South gable has inserted mid C20 entry. Two similar old plank doors to rear. Interior: C17 section retains 2 chamfered beams, one with ogee stop. 9-bay pegged collar-truss roof with tusk-tenoned purlins. A notable survival of an old livestock building, here associated with the lean- to dairy in the house (q.v.).
