Description
The Long Range of Outbuildings to the northwest of Sutton is a Grade II listed structure primarily consisting of a two-storey barn, which dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century. Later modifications include the addition of an internal floor for use as a cowhouse. The barn features a steep slate roof, with corrugated iron at the rear, and is constructed from squared rubble blocks accented with blue lias dressings around the doorways, some of which may have been reused.
An external stone stair on the right leads to a boarded loft door, while boarded loading doors are located to the left, along with ventilator slits. The entrance has a decayed chamfered arched head and a boarded door, with modern infill to the left-hand opening and another boarded door positioned far left.
Attached to the barn is a one-storey implement shed made of slate and rubble, which retains a blocked four-centred arched doorway at the upper level of its gable. Below this is a lean-to pig-sty. A single-storey range of corrugated and rubble construction continues to the west, ending with a parapet gable. This section features a central boarded door beneath a timber lintel and has steep A-frame pegged trusses inside.
In the yard to the north, there is a small one-storey unroofed rubble barn. The main barn boasts a fine five-bay pegged A-frame trussed roof, with ends that curve forward over the wall plates, cambered collars, and trenched purlins. There is a blocked splayed gable opening under timber lintels, and a cobbled cross passage with a partly blocked archway at the rear.
