Description
Garden wall, originally belonging to Morton's House. Probably late 18th century. Brick wall, mainly in rat-trap bond, with buttresses at intervals and flat stone capping.
The section dividing Herons and the Rectory has a rectangular opening with stone quoins. The wall above the opening is raised, forming a pediment, with a carved stone crowned bird (possibly a crane) on each side.
East of this, the wall is replaced by a series of freestanding brick piers with flat caps and stone urn finials.
The entrance to Herons, set diagonally at the junction of the west and south walls, has a pair of rectangular brick gatepiers (gates missing) with flat caps and carved stone birds (possibly eagles).
At the north end of the west boundary wall of Herons, the wall steps out to enclose a potting shed, which is not of special interest.
The east wall at its north end has a lower section south of Orchard Cottage which steps up to the south and ramps up over a bricked-up, timber-lintelled opening (the top course and coping removed). To the south is an inserted opening. To the north, the wall forms the rear wall of Orchard Cottage's garage (built circa 1970) and has been heightened in breeze-block. This part and the rest of the wall running northwards, which has been rebuilt (probably circa 1970) in whitish brick, is not of special interest.
The north wall ramps up westwards, with the old wall terminating at the circa 1980 garage of Thatch (not of special interest).
This is an interesting example of brickwork.
