Description

A pair of semi-detached houses in a row, dating from the early 19th century in Weymouth. The houses are built with a rendered exterior and have a hipped slate roof. They are double-depth, featuring a wide spiral stair in a hemicycle leading to a flat roof at each end. The front elevation is two storeys with an attic and basement, rising to a full three storeys at the rear. Each house has a six-pane and a nine-pane flat-roofed dormer with slate cheeks. The upper floors have twelve-pane sash windows in plain reveals with stone sills, while the basement features a two-light casement window contained by cast-iron railings. Plain arched openings above six-panel fielded doors with fanlights lead to the front, each with a single stone step. The rear of the houses has nine-pane dormers above twelve-pane sash windows, and each includes a wide eight:sixteen:eight-pane sash oriel bow, with inserted steel casements below. Steel escape staircases are located at either end. The interior of No. 10, specifically the ground floor and basement, was inspected, with the detail reportedly similar throughout No. 8. The stone spiral stair has an elliptical radial skylight; in No. 10, it is said that the stair formerly descended a further level to a well, but this has since been blocked. Original features include good reeded cornices and window shutters. Later 19th century fireplaces in marble are present in the ground floor rooms. The houses form part of a group of three pairs of semi-detached houses, including Nos. 4, 12, and 14.
