Description
A semi-detached pair of early 19th-century houses, part of a group of three such pairs. The houses are rendered, with a rubble rear wall and brick dressings, and have a hipped slate roof. They are double-depth, with party-wall fireplaces and stair halls to the outer walls, and include deep wings, reaching four storeys at the rear. Number 14 was undergoing reconstruction at the time of survey, with an added wing. The front of each house has two windows per storey; 12-pane sashes are at the eaves, above 15-pane sashes. A full-width balcony with a cast-iron tent hood resting on scroll brackets, trellis standards, and oval balustrade panels is present. The ground floor has 16-pane sashes in channelled rustication, with a 20th-century three-light window to the basement of Number 12, which has a cast-iron railing. Number 14 retains its original two-light casement. A central stack is present. The six-panel fielded front doors are set in arched openings with radial fanlights. The rear wings feature an 8:12:8-pane bowed oriel below a 12-pane sash, and the main rear wall includes six above 12-pane sashes. The interior contains flat reeded cornices and some early window shutters. Number 12 suffered storm damage in the late 1980s, and its balcony has since been rebuilt with careful matching detail.
