Description
The boundary wall, railings, gate pier, and plaque located to the east of Netherton Nursing Home date from the mid-18th century, with the plaque added in 1851. The wall and plaque are made of Portland ashlar, while the railings are cast iron.
The gate pier stands approximately 2.3 meters high and features banded ashlar with a capping on a modillion cornice and a moulded base. The dwarf wall is constructed from large stone blocks with weathered coping. It slopes down to the pavement on the left and rises to about 0.45 meters on the right, where it curves back towards the main front. A 20th-century gate is located here, and the wall is topped with simple railings.
At the right-hand end of the wall, there is a plain stone plaque set on the coping. The plaque bears an inscription in capital letters that reads: "THIS INSCRIPTION IS INSERTED TO COMMEMORATE THE DISINTERESTED CONDUCT OF JOHN CREE ESQUIRE A MAGISTRATE FOR THIS COUNTY BY WHOSE UNTIRING EXERTIONS AIDED BY A SUBSCRIPTION THIS DANGEROUS APPROACH TO WEYMOUTH WAS WIDENED TEN FEET MAY 1ST 1851."
