Description

The Greyhound Hotel is an 18th-century building that underwent significant alterations in the mid-19th century. It features a stucco front and stands three storeys tall. The building has continuous moulded impost bands on the ground and first floors, as well as continuous sill bands on the first and second floors. A moulded eaves cornice and a parapet adorned with vermiculated quatrefoil ornament add to its architectural interest. The rusticated quoins and horizontally rusticated ground floor are notable, with five sash windows each having blind round arches above, and tympana that are vermiculated.

There are planked double doors leading to a yard entry, topped by a blind semi-circular arch with a vermiculated tympanum. The main door features six moulded panels and a fanlight, with a blind gable above that has vermiculated panels in the tympanum. The first floor has five segment-headed sash windows, while the second floor has five sashes with shouldered surrounds and moulded pediment features.

On the west elevation, the ground floor is rusticated and has a moulded cornice, with three segment-headed windows (one featuring engraved glass), a part-glazed door, and a section of panelled doors leading to the yard. The left side includes Venetian windows on the first and second floors, with sashes and two small lights in the spandrels, all topped with a moulded cornice. Additionally, there are four more ranges of sashes in plain surrounds with a moulded cornice.

The Greyhound Hotel is part of a group that includes Nos 3 to 9 (odd) The Bridport Arts Centre, the annexe to the Bridport Arts Centre, and Nos 11 to 17 (odd), 17B, and 17A South Street.
