SY6684 CHURCH STREET, Upwey 873-1/6/532 (West side) 12/12/53 Entrance gates and bridge to Westbrook House

GV II

Entrance gates, piers, and bridge over the River Wey. Probably c1806. Portland stone, timber gates. A pair of rusticated piers approx 0.45m square and approx 3m high, on moulded bases, and with moulded capping plus blocking carrying fine urns with finials. The gate stops, in wood, have scrolled tops, with a pair of painted wooden gates, panelled below the mid-rail, and square bars to diagonal spikes; the top of the gates curved. From each pier there runs forward an ashlar parapet with moulded coping and plinth, swept out to the outer ends to short cylindrical piers. The parapets, approx 2.5m apart, rise approx 1m from the pavement over a bridge of one segmental arch of approx 2m span, rising approx 0.45m, with rusticated voussoirs.
