Description

The entrance gates and bridge to Westbrook House, located on Church Street in Upwey, date from around 1806. They are constructed from Portland stone and feature timber gates. The entrance is marked by a pair of rusticated piers, each approximately 0.45 meters square and about 3 meters high. These piers sit on moulded bases and have moulded capping, which supports fine urns with finials. The wooden gate stops are designed with scrolled tops, and the gates themselves are painted, with paneling below the mid-rail and square bars leading to diagonal spikes, while the tops of the gates are curved. Each pier is flanked by an ashlar parapet that has moulded coping and a plinth, which sweeps out to short cylindrical piers at the outer ends. The parapets are approximately 2.5 meters apart and rise about 1 meter from the pavement over a bridge that features a single segmental arch with a span of about 2 meters, rising approximately 0.45 meters and constructed with rusticated voussoirs.
