Description
The summerhouse located in the north-east corner of the garden of Number 25 Upwey Manor is a garden pavilion or gazebo dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed from rubble and flint, topped with a felt roof. This small hexagonal building features a pyramidal roof and is positioned snugly against the boundary walls to the north and east of Upwey Manor.
The west-facing entrance has a 20th-century plank door set in moulded jambs with a basket-arch head. To the right of the door, there is a small parabolic arch containing a two-light casement window with broad framing and a central mullion. The building is raised on an offset plinth, with eaves approximately 2.5 meters high.
Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported to have a geometric mosaic floor made from horses' eye teeth. Much of the stonework has a tufa-like texture, and the overall design reflects the best traditions of Romantic grotto architecture. It is likely that the roof was originally thatched.
