Description
THE SQUARE 1. 5193 No 1 (Barclays Bank) (formerly listed under West Borough) SU 0000 SE 2/104 14.6.52 II* GV 2. C18. Brick walls with stone details. Tiled roof, with dentil cornice at eaves. Truncated brick stack. Two storeys and attics. Ground floor has modern doors and windows. Moulded string course at first floor level. Two Venetian style windows on first floor, that facing West Borough now blocked. That facing The Square has double hung sashes. Also, facing West Borough, 2 double hung sash windows with glazing bars. Three dormers to attic, with hipped roofs and double hung sashes. Internally, ground floor much altered. On first floor, the room facing The Square has good C18 features, including fireplace with eared architrave surround and console supports. Niches each side of this with ogee arches. Moulded ceiling cornice. Landing has dado with raised panels, continuing up stairs to attic. Stairs, with cut strings and spandrel brackets, turned balusters and moulded handrail. Room facing West Borough has panelled dado. RCHM Monument 58.
