Description
Barclays Bank, located at The Square, is a notable 18th-century building featuring brick walls with stone details and a tiled roof that has a dentil cornice at the eaves. The structure consists of two storeys and attics, with a truncated brick stack. The ground floor has modern doors and windows, while a moulded string course runs at first floor level. On the first floor, there are two Venetian-style windows; the one facing West Borough is now blocked, and the one facing The Square has double hung sashes. Additionally, there are two double hung sash windows with glazing bars on the West Borough side. The attic features three dormers with hipped roofs and double hung sashes.
Internally, the ground floor has been significantly altered, but the first floor room facing The Square retains good 18th-century features, including a fireplace with an eared architrave surround and console supports, as well as niches on either side with ogee arches and a moulded ceiling cornice. The landing has a dado with raised panels that continues up the stairs to the attic. The staircase features cut strings, spandrel brackets, turned balusters, and a moulded handrail. The room facing West Borough has a panelled dado.
