Description

Smithy, Middle, Angel, and Steps Cottages are four attached cottages dating from the mid-18th century, with some 20th-century changes to the windows. The cottages have rubble stone walls that are rendered and color washed, topped with thatch roofs featuring gable ends. There are brick stacks at the left-hand gable, as well as between the Smithy and Middle cottages, and between the Angel and Steps cottages. The buildings are 1½ to 2 storeys high, with an irregular arrangement of windows: three windows for the Smithy, three for Middle, two for Angel, and two for Steps. The Smithy has 20th-century metal casements with lead lights, while the other cottages feature two-light wooden casements with glazing bars and wooden cills. The doors include a left-of-centre plank and glazed door for the Smithy, with a gabled porch and tiled roof; a plank door with a weatherboard brick porch and pentice slate roof from the 19th century for Middle; a plank door with one glazed light and a rendered porch with a gabled slate roof from the 19th century for Angel; and a glazed plank door from the 20th century for Steps, with a thatch porch canopy above.
