Description

Numbers 8 and 9 Bond Street is a commercial building with a shop, dating from the early to mid 19th century. The building is rendered, and the roof is not visible. It features an unusual design with a five-bay front facing Bond Street and a short return to St Thomas Street.

The exterior consists of four storeys. On Bond Street, the upper two floors have 12-pane over 16-pane sash windows set in reveals and sunk panels with basket-arch heads. The lower two floors display a series of bold flat Ionic pilasters that stop short of the moulded cornice. At the right end, there is a square pilaster with an inset corner. Notably, the pilasters do not align with the panels above, suggesting that the building may have been raised.

On the first floor, there are two blind openings and three plain sash windows. At ground level, the pilasters feature sunk panels, with each bay containing inset pilasters leading to consoles and a short section of fascia with a dentil cornice above three display windows and two doors, each with narrow side-lights and transom lights.

The return frontage has plain walling with 12 over 16-pane sashes, a wide two-light casement, and a three-pane display window that matches the detailing of the main front. This side also includes two-storey flat pilasters with stepped cappings and lacks a cornice between the pilasters. A thin moulded cornice and blocking-course are present, with the blocking raised as piers at the corners. The interior has not been inspected.
