Description
Court Orchard is a detached farmhouse dated 1751, with an additional date of HL 1762 inscribed in a fielded panel set into the porch. The building features ashlar stone walls and a continuous string course above the ground floor windows, which steps up over the front door. It has a steeply pitched hipped thatch roof and a central stone stack with a moulded cornice along the ridge.
The symmetrical facade consists of two storeys with five windows, each having two-light square-section stone mullions with beaded arrises. The windows are framed by a continuous architrave with chamfered cills, and most are fitted with fixed lead lights. There are five iron casements supported by three tension bars. The central front door is set within ovolo-roll jambs and features a dropped keystone. This door is a plank-and-muntin design, studded and hinged at the centre, dating from the 18th century.
The stone porch has a round-arch entrance with a dropped key, projecting impost-blocks, and stone gable-coping topped with an apex block and ball finial. The gable wall facing the lane has two single-light windows, each with a stone label above.
Inside, the lobby entrance includes the original doorcase, and the staircase is located beside the fireplace jambs. The house is designed as a double-pile structure under one roof, with a smaller rear pile. It features 18th-century fielded-panel shutters and a window seat. The left-hand room has a blocked fireplace with a chamfered lintel. The attached front wall is constructed of rubble stone with chamfered coping stones that ramp at the left-hand corner and return. The right-hand end of the building connects to a dairy.
